Every Ashcombe rug begins on a loom strung with a cotton foundation weave, where a single weaver ties each knot of combed New Zealand wool by hand, row by row, until the pattern emerges from thousands of small, deliberate decisions. It is slow work, and it shows: the pile carries a depth and irregularity that machine looms cannot quite replicate, and the plant-based dyes settle into the wool with the kind of soft variation you notice more the longer you live with it. A jute backing gives the finished rug enough body to lie flat without padding, which matters more than most people expect once it is underfoot.
